Finding Strength Through Awareness: Where Feldenkrais and Pilates Meet

Pilates offers something alternative in the world of developing strength and vitality through innovative exercises different from the habitual training in gyms and workout facilities. As a physical therapist and Feldenkrais® practitioner, I have found that many people maintain bodily tension in learning these new skills. This can often create strain in the execution of Pilates exercises and may often lead to injuries and rigidity. How do we tap into our own body intelligence to lead us to find our true strength? How can we heighten awareness while doing Pilates exercises to prevent injury and facilitate easy elegant strength? About Stacy Barrows

Stacy Barrows is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, PMA®-certified Pilates Instructor and Guild Certified Feldenkrais CM. She co-owns a dynamic physical therapy practice in Century City, California (www.centurycityPT.com.) Stacy has an extensive clinical background with foam rollers, using them to stimulate motor learning in clients ranging from children and athletes to seniors and the disabled. Based on her clinical experience, Stacy invented and patented the SMARTROLLER® along with its companion products, SMARTROLLER LINKS and SMARTROLLER SITS. These unique, user-friendly learning tools are designed to promotesensory-motor awareness and facilitate neuromuscular re-education. Stacy writes articles on foam roller use for sports and therapeutic magazines, and teaches internationally to health and fitness professionals. She has coauthored research on the effectiveness of the Feldenkrais Method® with fibromyalgia patients.
