On Imagination and Instinct
"...willpower and intelligence are merely superficial expressions of the mind whereas their deeper manifestations are imagination and instinct." -Hugo Bergman, forward to Thinking and Doing, a monograph by Moshe Feldenkrais.
The Feldenkrais Method® helps us become more finely tuned instruments to live our avowed and unavowed dreams. Moshe Feldenkrais wrote, “We act in accordance with our self image”. We have the power to change our image of ourselves through movement and awareness. When we pay close attention to our sensory experience, we become more attuned to our natural instincts and impulses. As our awareness expands we can choose to listen to our instincts or override them. Over time we develop the ability to differentiate old habits and compulsions that have outlived their usefulness from our new capacity to imagine different ways of moving, sensing, feeling, thinking and acting in the world. Feldenkrais® lessons help expand the space between intention and action. It is in that space where we find the freedom to get to know ourselves and make new choices. Moments of aesthetically satisfying movement become metaphors for an aesthetically satisfying life.
This talk will include a slideshow of art illustrating some of Moshe Feldenkrais’ writing + a mini Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement® lesson exploring the body as muse.
